Answer: In the West, Hippocrates, who can be considered the father of western medicine, talked of the Four Humors. According to his theory, all human beings can be categorized into four types: melancholic, sanguine, choleric, and phlegmatic. However, constitution theories have disappeared from the medical science. Nevertheless, it is not exaggerated to say that the understanding and practice of medicine itself, strictly speaking, finds its beginnings in the theory of body constitutions. Even Neiching, which is considered as the best textbook for oriental medicine, mentions that there are twenty-five types of yin and yang people, thus distinguishing between differences in physiology.

We sometimes see that between two individuals who are living in identical environments, one individual might suffer from food poisoning because of a certain food, while the other, on the contrary, benefits from the same food. This indicates that human beings can be categorized according to various body constitutions. Recently, I heard some people say, 쏧 used to be skinny in my childhood, but through much exercise my body constitution has changed. However, the constitution that I am referring to is the constitution which cannot change throughout one셲 entire life.
